Stories help children understand

WHY STORIES MATTER

Children encounter Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, disabilities, and caregiving in their families, schools, and communities. The right story gives them a way to explore something they may not yet know how to understand or explain.

Students stand behind a table displaying children’s books about disabilities, differences, kindness, and inclusion.

Understand themselves
Stories can help children see their own experiences and differences reflected on the page.

Understand someone they love
A book can help make sense of changes happening to a parent, grandparent, sibling, or someone else close to them.

Understand the experiences of others
Stories introduce children to lives and experiences different from their own in a natural, age-appropriate way.

When a child sees themselves in a story

A MOMENT THAT SAYS IT ALL

“That’s like me. That’s like me.”

A child recognized their own limb difference in one of the books provided by Nana’s Books Foundation. The moment captured the purpose behind thoughtfully selected stories: helping children recognize themselves and better understand the experiences around them.

WHERE IT BEGAN

A love of books that became a legacy

Nancy Dulniak, the librarian and avid reader whose life and legacy inspired Nana’s Books Foundation.

Nana’s Books Foundation was created in memory of Nancy Dulniak, a lifelong librarian, avid reader, mother, and grandmother whose love of books was woven throughout her life.

After Nancy was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease, her family’s experience helped inspire a foundation that could use books to help children understand Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other experiences that can be difficult to explain.
